Herkulu Tea Estate
meet the farmers
The black tea used in our Chai blend is grown deep in the Usambara mountains, located at the Herkulu estate in north east Tanzania. This region has been pioneering organic tea farming and growing it for many decades.
The estate covers 230 hectares of tea bushes, surrounded by the last remaining virgin rainforest in Tanzania. The owners also work together with local smallhold farmers whose tea is processed in the estate’s factory.
The tea is grown at an elevation of 1500 metres above sea level, giving it a distinct and unique flavour profile only found in high elevation teas. The estate keeps its own cattle herd and composts any green matter to use as organic fertiliser for the tea trees.
We are very happy to be able to use this tea in our chai blend because their values align with Ujamaa, especially in terms of local employees and communities being paid fair wages and receiving numerous benefits through fairtrade premiums (e.g. roofing projects, maize mill, school buildings etc).
Not only is this tea carefully and ethically produced, its flavour is also outstanding!
